A DRUID'S OATH (2024)

Alun and Grace are druids and they spend everyday being so. People may have their misconceptions about them but they don’t let that stop them from living their best lives and run their shop in the Ffwrwm, heart of Caerleon.

This is a film about spirituality, love and Druidry. I  have decided to make this film because when I was younger I had gone to Caerleon with my brother and father. I have fond memories of this and so I decided to go there again at the start of the year. I faintly remember my father saying something about the owners, so, fast forward a couple of years and I returned.  That’s when I met Alun at the 'Spirit of Awen'. I spoke to him briefly and I bought a copy of ‘The Black Book of Carmarthen’. After that I walked around the town and learnt about its rich history with the Romans and the theory that Caerleon was Camelot. When I got home I decided to do some online research on ‘Spirit of Awen’, Alun’s shop and that’s when I came across an article which states that Alun and his wife are Druids. That is when I decided to make this documentary about Alun and Grace.

I think that making the film now is more crucial than ever because stereotypes can be and are harmful, especially when those stereotypes depict you as someone who kills animals for rituals and devil worship. After an initial chat with Alun and Grace these are one of many things I learnt about them and Druids as a whole. I want to tackle the social issues of stereotypes of spirituality and Druids. Especially how it affects Alun and Grace in their home and work life.

I believe that my chosen topic will resonate with the people of the druid community because it is a film made by, with and for them. This is a film where they will be given a voice. A voice that may allow change to be made. This film will also educate those with misconceptions about Druids and hopefully change their minds. Media that inspired me during the filmmaking process were ‘Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends’. (1998 - 2000).
